Austin Maternity Photography: When Should You Actually Schedule It?

There are two different dates involved in maternity photography, and they're constantly treated like the same question. When should you book your photographer? and When should the actual maternity session happen? They are not the same. For most pregnancies, the familiar 28–34-week range is a useful starting point for the session. ACOG defines the third trimester as beginning at 28 weeks. But I would much rather hear from you before week 28.

When Should You Book?

Ideally, start looking during your second trimester. That doesn't mean your photographs happen then. It gives us time to choose the actual date, location, wardrobe and backup options without squeezing everything into the final weeks of pregnancy.

This matters even more if you want:

  • a weekend,
  • sunset,
  • spring wildflowers,
  • a specific studio,
  • or fall family/maternity photographs.

Those dates are competing with everyone else who wants the same conditions.

When Should the Session Happen?

For many expecting moms, approximately 28–34 weeks creates a good balance. The bump is established, but you're not automatically at the very end of pregnancy. That range isn't a medical rule and it isn't a guarantee of how you'll feel. It's a photography planning window.

First Pregnancy vs Later Pregnancies

I don't believe in assigning every body the exact same week. With later pregnancies, some clients show earlier. Some people remain comfortable well into the third trimester. Others are done walking through a field much sooner.

What I care about is whether your bump has the shape you want photographed and whether you can comfortably do the kind of session we're planning. A studio session with minimal walking gives us more flexibility than an outdoor location involving trails and outfit changes.

Austin Summer Changes the Equation

This is the part national maternity-photo advice misses. Thirty-two weeks pregnant in Austin in July is not the same logistical experience as 32 weeks pregnant somewhere with a 72-degree evening. Heat affects:

  • comfort,
  • walking tolerance,
  • makeup,
  • hair,
  • swelling,
  • wardrobe,
  • children joining the session,
  • and how long anyone actually wants to stand outside.

For summer pregnancies, I may suggest:

  • an earlier pregnancy week,
  • sunrise,
  • an indoor studio,
  • a very low-walking outdoor location,
  • or a session with fast access back to air conditioning.

That isn't sacrificing the photographs. It's planning them properly.

Studio vs Outdoor Timing

A studio gives us environmental control. We don't have to chase sunset. Wind matters less. Heat matters less. Walking can be minimal. Outdoor maternity photographs give us movement, landscape and natural light, but the environment gets a vote. If your ideal session falls in an uncomfortable weather period, read my Austin Indoor Photo Options for Extreme Heat or Rain guide before assuming you need to postpone.

What If I'm Already 35 Weeks?

Ask. Don't decide for the photographer that you “missed it.” A later maternity session can still work if you're comfortable and we choose the location intelligently. I would rather create a beautiful, simpler session at 35 weeks than tell someone she missed an imaginary deadline at 34 weeks and one day.

What If I Need to Reschedule?

This is another reason I don't love planning at the absolute edge of pregnancy. Weather happens. Children get sick. Pregnancy changes. Leaving some breathing room gives us somewhere to move.

If you're expecting in Austin, Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park or Leander, send me your due date and the kind of maternity session you're imagining.

We can work backward from there and choose a date that makes sense for your body, our weather and the photographs you actually want.
