You're pregnant, you're glowing, and you want photos that actually capture this season. But when you start researching maternity photography, you quickly realize there's a choice to make: outdoor session or studio session? Both are beautiful. Both have real advantages. And the right answer is genuinely different for every mama. Here's what you need to know about each so you can make the decision that feels right for you.

What an Outdoor Maternity Session Looks and Feels Like

Outdoor sessions are all about natural light, open space, and a backdrop that feels like the world around you. There is something undeniably magical about a pregnant silhouette against a golden Texas sky, or a flowing dress catching a breeze through a cedar field in the Hill Country.

In the Austin and Leander area, we have gorgeous options — open fields, wildflower patches, lakeside trails, limestone landscapes, wooded paths. Each season changes the palette completely. Spring gives you green and bloom. Summer evenings have that rich golden warmth. Fall brings a moodier, earthier feel.

Golden hour light is especially flattering for maternity portraits. It wraps around your curves softly, adds warmth to your skin, and creates an ethereal glow that studio lighting simply can't replicate in the same way.

Outdoor sessions also lend themselves naturally to movement and candidness. Walking hand in hand with your partner, sitting barefoot in the grass, letting the wind catch your dress, as these organic moments tend to produce the most emotionally resonant images. If you love the idea of photos that feel more like a story than a portrait, outdoor is likely your fit.

Outdoor is a great fit if you:

  • Love natural light and open landscapes
  • Want a relaxed, candid, lifestyle feel
  • Have a meaningful location in mind
  • Are comfortable with some unpredictability (weather, timing, light)
  • Want to include a partner, kids, or a pet with plenty of space to move

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Sessions are scheduled around golden hour, typically 1–2 hours before sunset, so timing matters
  • Texas summer heat is real — we plan accordingly, but outdoor comfort at 32+ weeks is worth considering
  • Weather can occasionally require rescheduling

What a Studio Maternity Session Looks and Feels Like

A pregnant Black woman in a red dress embraces her partner in a tender maternity studio portrait.

Studio sessions are intimate, controlled, and intentional. Everything, the light, the backdrop, the mood, is shaped specifically around you. There are no weather variables, no time pressure chasing the sun, no crowds at a public location.

The look of a studio maternity session tends to be more editorial and timeless. Clean backgrounds keep the focus entirely on your body and your expression. Dramatic or soft lighting can be shaped to flatter exactly how you want to be seen. The result is often a more polished, magazine-quality portrait.

For mamas who want images with a bare belly, draped fabric, or anything more intimate, a studio offers the privacy to feel fully at ease. No strangers walking by, no adjusting your positioning based on who might be nearby.

Studio sessions also make outfit changes seamless. You're not hunting for a spot behind a tree, so you step behind a curtain and you're ready for your next look. If you want to explore multiple styles in one session, studio is where that's easiest to execute.

Studio is a great fit if you:

  • Want a more editorial, timeless, polished aesthetic
  • Prefer privacy, especially for more intimate looks
  • Are in the third trimester and want comfort to be a priority
  • Want multiple outfit changes without logistical headaches
  • Like the idea of a controlled, distraction-free environment

A few things to keep in mind:

  • You won't have the organic movement and natural landscape of an outdoor session
  • The look is more classic and structured — beautiful, but different in feel

The Honest Comparison: Light

The single biggest difference between the two sessions is light, and how it's created.

Outdoor sessions use the sun. When the timing is right, natural light is incomparable. It's soft, directional, warm, and completely flattering for a pregnant body. The golden hour glow on a mama's bump is one of the most beautiful things a camera can capture.

Studio sessions use controlled artificial lighting. This isn't a limitation, but it's a different tool. A skilled photographer can use studio light to create depth, drama, softness, or radiance, and the result is consistent regardless of what time of day or what the weather is doing outside.

Neither is better than the other.

They just produce images with a different energy. Natural light tends to feel more organic and warm. Studio light tends to feel more refined and precise. Look at examples of both and notice which one makes your heart respond.

Timing: When to Book

Both session types are best scheduled between 28 and 34 weeks. At this point your bump is beautifully full and round, but you're typically still comfortable enough to move freely and enjoy yourself. Waiting past 36 weeks can make physical comfort a challenge, so earlier is better.

For outdoor sessions, consider what the light and landscape look like at the time of year you'll be in your third trimester. Spring and fall in Central Texas are stunning for outdoor sessions. Summer is doable with a well-timed golden hour session, but the heat is a real factor. Winter can actually be lovely, mild temperatures and softer light.

For studio sessions, season doesn't matter at all. We shoot whenever works for you.

What About Both?

You don't have to choose just one. Some of my favorite maternity galleries combine a short studio portion with an outdoor golden hour session, you get the polished, intimate portraits and the open, luminous landscape images, all in one experience. If you're genuinely torn, this might be your answer.

The Bottom Line

Ask yourself this: when you imagine your maternity photos hanging on your wall, what do you see? A soft, airy image of you in a field at golden hour, dress flowing, light wrapping around your bump? Or a clean, timeless close-up with dramatic light, nothing in the background but you?

Both are worth having. Both will make you cry when you look back at them.

I work with expecting mamas all across the Austin and Leander, Texas area, and I'm happy to talk through which option, or which combination, and makes the most sense for you and your vision.
