Senior year flies by faster than anyone warns you about. One day you're picking classes, the next you're staring down graduation, and somewhere in between, you deserve photos that actually look like you. Not a stock photo version of a senior. You. This is your complete guide to the Diamond Cowgirl Photography senior portrait experience, from the very first questionnaire all the way to your graduation cards. No surprises, just the full picture (pun intended).
Step 1: The Questionnaire
After you book, the first thing you'll receive is a personalized questionnaire. This is where the magic starts. I want to know everything from your vibe, your hobbies, your favorite places in the Austin or Leander area, whether you're more wildflower fields or downtown murals, whether you want something moody or bright and airy. I'll ask about your style, what you want to feel when you look at these photos in ten years, and whether there are any must-have shots on your list. This questionnaire isn't busywork. It's how I make sure your session is built around your personality instead of a cookie-cutter formula.
Step 2: Location Scouting

Once I know your vision, I get to work scouting locations that match it.
Central Texas has incredible variety, from the limestone landscapes and cedar trails around Leander to the colorful murals and urban backdrops of Austin. I scout ahead of your session to check lighting, angles, and composition so that when we show up on session day, we're not wandering around guessing. We're making photos.
If there's a specific spot that's meaningful to you, a family property, your school, a local landmark, let's talk about it. I'm always open to locations with a story behind them.
Step 3: Planning Your Outfits
You'll want 2–3 outfit changes. I recommend thinking in these categories: one dressy, one casual, and one that's just you, whatever that means. Your favorite jeans and boots? Done. A flowy dress in a bluebonnet field? Absolutely. Your cap and gown for a few shots? Yes, bring it.

A few Texas-specific tips:
- Lightweight fabrics are your best friend. Central Texas heat is no joke, especially for evening golden hour sessions. Breathable materials mean you stay comfortable and look relaxed in photos.
- Avoid large logos and busy patterns as they pull focus away from your face.
- Muted tones and soft colors photograph beautifully against our landscapes. Think dusty rose, sage, cream, denim, warm neutrals.
- Bring a backup option in a bag as you never know what you'll want once you're on location.
Do NOT get a spray tan right before your session as it tends to photograph orange. Your natural skin tone photographs best.

Step 4: Hair & Makeup

Getting your hair and makeup professionally done is 100% worth it for senior portraits, but it's not required. What matters is that you feel like yourself.
If you go the professional route, book a trial run first so nothing is a surprise on session day. If you're doing your own look, practice it in the days leading up so you feel confident and familiar with it.
Either way: drink plenty of water the week of your session, moisturize, get your nails done if that's your thing, and skip anything drastic or brand-new right before.
Step 5: The Session Day
Sessions typically run 1–2 hours, starting 1–2 hours before sunset to catch that golden Texas light. I'll guide you through every pose, where to put your hands, how to angle your shoulders, how to get a genuine laugh instead of a stiff smile. You don't need to know how to model. That's my job.
Here's what to bring:
- All outfits, steamed and ready
- Your cap and gown (if you have it)
- Class ring
- Any props that tell your story — instrument, jersey, favorite book, your dog
- Touch-up makeup, hairspray, a brush
- Comfortable shoes for moving between spots
- A light snack if you'll be hungry
Plan for some buffer time so you're not rushing to arrive. Relaxed energy translates directly into relaxed photos. During the session, I'll move through locations and outfit changes with intention. We'll get the classic, polished shots and the candid in-between moments. Both matter. Some of the best images happen when you forget the camera is there.
Step 6: The Sneak Peek
Within 48–72 hours of your session, you'll receive a sneak peek, a handful of my favorite images from the day, lightly edited and ready to share. This is the part where you text your mom, post to Instagram, and start getting excited for the full gallery.
Step 7: Your Final Gallery
Your full, edited gallery will be delivered within 2-3 weeks via a private online link. Every image is fully edited, color, light, and retouching done with care. Your gallery will include downloadable images in high resolution with a print release. I back up your files for one year, but I always recommend downloading and saving yours to an external drive as soon as you receive them.
Step 8: Prints, Wall Art & Graduation Cards
Digital files are wonderful, but prints are forever. Through Diamond Cowgirl Photography, you can order professional-quality prints, wall art, and graduation announcement cards directly from your gallery. I work exclusively with professional printing labs that render your colors correctly and produce prints that will last. This is not the same as printing at a drugstore or big-box retailer, the difference in quality is significant.
Graduation cards especially are something I love helping seniors design. You've got the images; let's make something your grandparents will put on the refrigerator.

Here's the timeline at a glance:
The Short Version
Book → Receive questionnaire → Location scouting → Plan outfits & hair → Session day → Sneak peek (48–72 hrs) → Full gallery → Prints & graduation cards

Senior portraits aren't just a checkbox. They're one of the last times in your life you'll be photographed as this version of yourself before the next chapter begins. That's worth doing well.
I serve seniors across the greater Austin and Leander, Texas area, and I would love to capture your senior year. Spots fill up fast, especially in the fall.
