If you've been putting off booking family photos because you're convinced your toddler will refuse to cooperate, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things I hear from parents here in Leander and the Austin area: "My kids never sit still" or "Last time was a disaster."

Here's the truth — I've never met a child who ruined a session. What looks like chaos in the moment often becomes the most real, most treasured images in your gallery. That said, a little preparation goes a long way. These are the tips I share with every family before we meet up.

The Week Before: Set the Stage Without the Pressure

Talk to your kids about the session a day or two ahead, not weeks in advance. For toddlers especially, too much buildup creates anxiety. Keep it simple and fun: "We're going to go outside and play together, and someone is going to take pictures of our family."

That's it. No lectures about smiling. No threats about behavior. Frame it as an outing, not a performance. If your child asks more questions, you can show them a photo of me from my website so I'm not a complete stranger when we meet.

The Day Of: Nail the Basics

The biggest factors in how a session goes with young kids come down to three things: sleep, food, and timing.

Schedule around nap time. If your toddler naps, try to plan the session so they're either freshly woken up from a nap or well before they'd normally go down. A tired two-year-old is nobody's friend, including the two-year-old.

Feed them before we meet. A full belly makes a happy kid. Bring a small bag of easy, non-messy snacks too, things like puffs, dried fruit, or a granola bar, for a mid-session pick-me-up if needed. Avoid anything that stains (looking at you, berries).

Keep the day low-key. This isn't the day for a birthday party, a long trip, or anything overstimulating beforehand. A calm, restful morning sets everyone up for success.

Dressing Them Comfortably (Without Sacrificing the Look)

Here in Central Texas, heat is a real consideration, especially for outdoor sessions in Leander or around Austin. Lightweight, breathable fabrics make a huge difference. A child who's hot and itchy will let you know. Prioritize comfort without sacrificing coordinated style. Soft fabrics, easy layers, and shoes they can actually move in. I offer styling guidance to all my clients, so you don't have to figure this out alone. Always pack a backup outfit, spills and blowouts don't check the calendar.

During the Session: Let Go of the "Perfect" Expectation

Your child does not need to perform. My goal is never a forced smile on command, it's the laugh that happens when you tickle them, the way they reach for your hand, the quiet moment of a forehead kiss. Toddlers warm up at their own pace. Sometimes I'll start with the adults or older siblings first to give littles time to get comfortable with me and the location. Other times we dive right in with the kids while they still have energy. I'll read the room and adjust. The best thing you can do during the session? Relax and play with your kids. When they see you having fun, they have fun. Your nervous energy transfers, and so does your joy.

If there's a meltdown, we pause. If they need to run for five minutes, we let them run. Sessions with toddlers are flexible by design, not by accident.

A Few Extra Things That Make a Difference

Bring a comfort item if needed. A favorite stuffed animal or toy can help a shy or nervous child feel grounded, especially at the start of the session.

Plan a treat for after. Ice cream, a favorite snack, a special activity, let them know there's something fun coming once we're done. Not as a bribe, just as something to look forward to. It keeps the energy positive and gives the session a natural, happy ending.

Pack a change of clothes. Especially if we're near water or a grassy field. Pajamas for the car ride home are honestly a genius move.

You Don't Have to Have It All Together

Family photos aren't about perfection. They're about this season, your kids at exactly this age, your family exactly as it is right now. The messy hair, the wiggly toddler, the older sibling who's "too cool" until they're suddenly not. That's what's worth preserving. I work with families all across the Leander and Austin, Texas area, and I promise: no matter how your kids show up, we will get the shots. I've got the patience, the tricks, and the experience to make it work.
